Baby feeding buying guide: bibs, plates and cups

Feeding a baby needs a few well-chosen items, not a cupboard full of gadgets. This guide covers what to buy first and what to check.

The short list

  • Bibs: wipe-clean or fabric, sized to the neckline.
  • Plates/bowls: check suction and dishwasher safety.
  • Spoons: soft tips, sized for a small mouth.
  • A cup: open or first free-flow cup as advised.
  • A washable floor mat or cloth.

Compare items in our store, and read our starter guide to baby-led weaning first foods.

What to check

For bibs, look at neckline fit and coverage. For plates, check suction and whether they are dishwasher-safe. For spoons, check softness and length. Always follow the maker's age and supervision guidance.

Safety first

Feed your baby upright and supervised, learn infant first aid, and introduce allergens one at a time. Ask your health visitor or doctor about when and how to start solids.

Wait on specialised tools until you know what your baby needs. Introduce one change at a time.
